Washington Lake Reservoir Overflowed Yesterday Causing Closure of Little Britain Rd./Rt. 207

City and Towns of Newburgh and New Windsor

According to New Windsor officials, around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday workers from the City of Newburgh shut down Little Britain Road (Route 207) to conduct emergency flood mitigation activities (additional work is being done in Hamptonburgh, see below).  Workers could be seen pumping water from the portion of the reservoir on the South side of the road to the main portion of the reservoir on the North side of the road.  The smaller portion of the lake was visibly higher than the larger portion and almost reached the height of the roadway.

A drainage ditch running through a group of nearby residential properties was filled with water that came overtop the bank of the reservoir.  The water continued through the properties finally draining into a series of state Department of Transportation culvert pipes running under Route 300.

New Windsor officials said that a section of the road between the intersection of Route 300 and 207 and Clarkview Road would remain closed until Thursday morning.

The image shows that it is a significant water source along with the other rivers and streams passing through New York State.

Additional work on Route 207 is currently being done in Hamptonburgh resulting in closure of Route 207 in the area of Maybrook and Otter roads to replace a culvert...one of many being done in our area for flood mitigation. Route 207 is expected to remain closed for the Hamptonburgh work until March 29.
