WARWICK- The Orange County Land Trust is set to obtain Warwick’s Gibraltar Rock, a 136-acre property, with the help of a $484,000 federal grant.
The Gibraltar Rock property is rich in history. Due to the property’s rock formations, it was regarded by Native Americans as sacred ground. It also became a popular place for tourists, hikers, and locals alike who often visit the area to picnic or sightsee. For decades, residents have been pushing for the property to be preserved.
“We envision Gibraltar Rock Community Forest as a vibrant community hub where residents, schools and community groups can visit to learn about the natural, geological, and historical significance of the property, recreate, or spend quality time outdoors,” Land Trust Executive Director Jim Delaune.
Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus celebrated the acquisition.

“Enhancing and expanding our parks, trails and open spaces for public recreation, tourism, and quality of life is an ongoing priority for Orange County, so the addition of a USFS sponsored Community Forest is exciting.”
Gibraltar Rock is Orange County’s first federally designated community forest.
