Lawler Condemned for Politicizing Humanitarian Aid in Middle East Crisis

.Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) is being criticized for using the current situation in Israel for political gain. Democratic party leaders from Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties denounced Lawler on Thursday. “Less than 24 hours after a horrific terrorist attack against Israel, Congressman Mike Lawler took to social media and television to politicize the current tragedy in Israel,” said the statement issued by Westchester County Democratic Chairwoman Suzanne Burger, Rockland Democratic Chairman Schenley Vital, and Putnam Democratic Chairwoman Jennifer Colomanico.

“He knowingly pushed the lie that funds designated by the Biden Administration for humanitarian relief in Iran are actually being used by Hamas in its ongoing assault. This cynical lie about the humanitarian relief funds has been extensively debunked, including by MSNBC’s Jen Psaki when she fact-checked Congressman Lawler on-air last Sunday and he was forced to concede the inaccuracy of his allegation.” The three Democrats say Lawler, after being caught in a lie, has “doubled down” on his misinformation campaign. “In a time of unfathomable pain and suffering, it is beyond the pale that a sitting U.S. Congressman would leverage the pain and fear of his constituents throughout the Lower Hudson Valley to score cheap political points.”

“Ironically, Congressman Lawler voted to cut $1 billion in critical U.S. aid to Israel on Friday, September 29,” according to the statement from the three party leaders.

Lawler’s office issued a news release on Thursday touting his resolution condemning the New York City Democratic Socialists of America for what he calls their “shocking display of support” during their rally approving the Hamas attacks on Israel. The bill is cosponsored by Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY-19)
