A Wizard's Path: Camryn Ardovino
For Washingtonville High School senior Camryn Ardovino, balance isn’t just something she practices on the court or the field — it’s a way of life. As a multi-sport athlete, STEM enthusiast, dedicated researcher and active member of several service clubs, Camryn has spent her high school years juggling a wide range of passions while delivering standout performances in the classroom, on the soccer field and on the basketball court.
Since freshman year, soccer has been a fixture in Camryn’s high school career. As a center back, she reads the entire field, organizes plays and keeps her teammates connected through steady communication.
“A big part of the position is communicating with the rest of the team because you can see everything from back there,” she explained.
On the basketball court, Camryn brings the same focus and skill as a center, a spot she’s held since sophomore year. Last season, she was named one of the Top 50 All-Section All-Stars by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
This fall was a milestone season in her soccer career. For the first time in nearly a decade, Washingtonville advanced past the first round of Section play, ultimately making it all the way to the Section 9 Championship game in one of their strongest seasons yet.
“We’d never made it past the first round while I’ve been here,” Camryn said. “This year was different, everyone wanted what was best for each other and worked really hard. We had so much adversity this season, but it just built our motivation to go even further.”
Beating longtime rival Valley Central in a 1-0 victory was another highlight of the season.
“We had a curse against VC for years,” she joked. “Winning that first sectional game felt huge.”
Camryn was also selected as a 2025 Section 9 Girls’ Soccer All-Star, placing her among the top players in the region; and she’s just getting started, she’s committed to play soccer at William Smith College next fall.
In the classroom, Camryn has challenged herself with accelerated and honors courses, including Calculus BC and AP Chemistry. She is a proud member of National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, Wizards Against Cancer, GEMS in STEM, Best Buddies and Special Olympics.
Her love for science drew her to Washingtonville’s highly regarded Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) Science Research class – a three year commitment that Camryn has dedicated to studying the impact of energy drink consumption on sleep quality.
“I was obsessed with drinking energy drinks and had a really bad sleep schedule,” she shrugged. “I wanted to find out if there was a correlation.”
Her research includes:
An interactive data board where participants map their sleep habits using color-coded strings
A detailed Google Form survey for baseline sleep and energy drink intake
A full research poster
A soon-to-be-completed research article aimed at publication
And even a children’s book she wrote and illustrated, titled Kim’s Big Game: Too Much Energy, Not Enough Game, which simplifies her findings for elementary readers
This December, she will present her work at the Clarkstown Research Symposium, with another showcase planned for the Washingtonville STEM Fair in the spring.
Camryn plans to major in psychology at William Smith next fall and eventually earn a master’s in education, following in the footsteps of her mom, who teaches first grade nearby at Taft Elementary School. “I go into her class sometimes and read to the students,” she said. “I can’t see myself doing anything else.”
Her ability to thrive in both academics and athletics comes down to one skill: organization. “I always hold myself to high standards,” she said. “Staying organized, making lists, surrounding myself with motivated people — those things keep me balanced. And as a student-athlete, the ‘student’ part always comes first.”
As senior year unfolds, Camryn is looking forward to the memories ahead.
“I’m excited to spend time with all my friends before we go away to college,” she said. “Senior Banquet, Senior Week, all those things that make the year special.”
Before wrapping up, Camryn made sure to acknowledge the people who helped her get here. “I want to thank my parents, my teachers, my coaches and my friends,” she said. “They’ve always supported me, answered my questions and encouraged me when I needed it.”
