"From the Low Mucklands to the Highlands to the Catskills,
Art is Deeply Ingrained in our Region"
Artists and Poets of the geographic region in which we live and work really love this place. The topography varies from the low mucklands of the Black Dirt area to the Hudson Highlands and the Catskill Mountains and the many waterways from creeks, brooks, and ponds to the mighty Hudson and the raging Delaware (during thaws). A few cities have developed at key junctions in history and continue growing today with sprawl. However, even with the larger population, it’s the hamlets, villages, and towns that shape the diverse character of area. And, people love the open space, the wilderness –if not in their backyards, just a few minutes away. So, when a call went out in CANVAS and via email invitation, for Our Region ~ its Beauty! its Demise? artists and poets reacted and brought photographs, paintings, drawings, linoleum block reductions, scratchboard engraving, and collage and poets sent their poems. The concept moved one visual artist so much that she painted new works accompanied by statements and a poet wrote a work directly related to the photographs next to which it is hung. The works of forty artists and ten poets ~ 97 artworks and 22 poems, share their feelings. Interestingly, the invasives possess beauty in their own right. Industrial related demise is quietly depicted.
