According to numerous news sources receiving information from the Westchester Dept. of Health and Environmental Facilities, recreationers would do well to steer clear of the Hudson River for their water activities until a major force main at the Crotonville pump station has completed repairs and thoroughly tested the River's water afterward. Is Crotonville far away? Yes it is, but the amount of the discharge of "partially treated sewage" is colossal, at about 1 million gallons PER DAY. Consequently, the warning extends all the way from Ossining to Yonkers!!! and the recommendation to both swimmers and boaters is to stay clear of the water until further notice. The Croton River is also closed to recreation. The main break occurred on Friday afternoon and residents in the area have been asked to use as little water as possible in an effort to dilute the effluent. This is not the first time such a break has happened, the last one being in 2019. But that time the break, due to a very rusty old pipe, released 'only' 30,000 gallons into the River daily. That time it was raw sewage.
