Skoufis & SUNY Orange Leadership Announce $250k in Funding for AI & Healthcare Workforce Center

Senator James Skoufis (D-Orange County) joined SUNY Orange President Dr. Kristine Young to announce $250,000 in new state funding for the community college. The funding will help establish SUNY Orange’s AI & Healthcare Workforce Center, the first initiative of its kind in the state.

SUNY Orange has long been a leader in health professions education and workforce training and will use the $250k to begin development of the SUNY Orange AI & Healthcare Workforce Center. The college aims to build an agile, scalable training model that responds to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in healthcare. In use, the  center will serve as a regional hub for innovation and collaboration, connecting education, industry, and public agencies. It will focus on developing employer-driven workforce training, expanding faculty AI agility, and improving credential pathways that are flexible and responsive to emerging workforce needs.

“The healthcare industry employs more Orange County workers than any other field, so investing in the future of workforce training makes short and long-term sense,” said Senator James Skoufis. “SUNY Orange has been training generations of healthcare workers, and the Workforce Center will enable their faculty to continue to teach and train learners heading into this ever-evolving field. I deeply appreciate SUNY Orange’s contribution to our community; I fought hard for this funding and it’s gratifying to see this exciting project take shape.”

“The College is deeply appreciative of the support and confidence Senator Skoufis continues to show in us to deliver creative and pioneering academic and workforce training programming that best serves his constituents and residents throughout the Hudson Valley,” said Dr. Kristine Young. “Our vision for an AI & Healthcare Workforce Center leans into all of the College’s strengths, including our history of developing and producing highly competent graduates from our health professions degree programs, as well as our skill at building innovative partnerships that deliver relevant in-demand workforce trainings and certifications.

“Through this upcoming work, our students will learn how to partner with AI tools and technologies in ways that strengthen care, improve systems, and create new pathways for professional growth. We’re grateful for the Senator's confidence in our vision, and proud to position the Hudson Valley as a leader in AI-informed healthcare education.”

The center will partner with local healthcare providers to target frontline to mid-level healthcare workers—those most immediately impacted by technological disruption.
