GOSHEN – John Reilly III of Chester was arraigned on Monday in Orange County Court on an indictment charging him with, among other things, attempted murder in the shooting of a DoorDash delivery man.
Reilly, 48, was also charged with two counts of assault and eight counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
It is alleged that in the evening of May 2, the delivery driver was lost and whose phone battery had died, walked up to the Reilly home in the Town of Chester with a bag of food, asking if Reilly had made the order.
In response, Reilly, who is the town highway superintendent, ordered the man to leave and when the driver attempted to leave in his vehicle, Reilly came out of his house with a .45 caliber Glock pistol and fired a round into the front lawn.
As the victim attempted to leave in his vehicle, Reilly allegedly shot at it ands seconds later, aimed at the car and fired. A round pierced the car and struck the victim in the lower back causing what the indictment says were devastating injuries.
The victim underwent emergency surgery during which over two feet of his small bowel were removed.
A warrant search led to the recovery of .45 caliber casings in the kitchen and front law, the projectile from the front law, the shoulder holster and loaded .45 caliber gun, and seven other illegally possessed pistols from the home.
It was learned by police that while Reilly held a Federal Firearms License in order to sell firearms, he had no New York State firearms license or pistol permit and therefore could not lawfully possess those guns in the state.
“The unprovoked violence alleged in this case is truly horrifying,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “There is a reason that, as law enforcement in Orange County, we have such a particular focus on the illegal use of firearms. This case stands as yet another reminder of the awful consequences of these weapons, particularly when wielded in the manner allegedly seen in this case.
