Today we celebrate the incredible career of K-9 Kato, who is retiring after 9 years of dedicated service to the people of Orange County. At nearly 11 years old, Kato has spent the majority of his life protecting our community, standing side by side with his handler, Deputy Vinnie Iannuzzi.
Deputy Iannuzzi, one of our two lead instructors at the Orange County K-9 Training Facility, has guided Kato through countless calls, searches, and demonstrations—always showcasing the skill, loyalty, and heart that make our K9 Unit so special.
Sheriff Paul Arteta shared:
“K-9 Kato represents the very best of our Sheriff’s Office—loyal, courageous, and unwavering in his duty. His years of service alongside Deputy Iannuzzi have made Orange County safer and stronger. We are grateful for his sacrifice and proud to honor him as he begins a well‑earned retirement.”
Kato’s legacy is one of courage, commitment, and compassion. While his days of service are coming to a close, his impact will continue to inspire the next generation of K9 teams.
Please join us in thanking K-9 Kato for his years of service and wishing him a well-deserved retirement filled with rest, play, and love.
Thank you, Kato—you’ve made Orange County safer, stronger, and prouder.
