It's Gardening Time! Learn Sustainable Organic Growing From an Orange Environment Expert

Where: Warwick Valley Community Center, 11 Hamilton Ave., Warwick, NY Orange Environment, Inc. is hosting 2 workshops on Saturday, April 15 th , 2023, at the Warwick Valley Community Center, 11 Hamilton Ave. in Warwick on how to “Practice Sustainable Living” by growing your own vegetables organically and learning how to prepare the soil to build it up through home composting and soil conservation.


Gardening Success Begins With Healthy Soil


The morning session, from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30, covers Growing Organic Vegetables From Seed to Harvest for a fee of $35. Organic gardening gives you the chance to create the garden you want, enjoy fresh and healthy food, and is a way to protect the environment. Topics include: germinating seeds, improving soil for planting organically, succession planting, irrigation methods, using natural methods for pest, disease, and weed control, crop rotation, companion planting, container and herb gardening, and will include a demo on starting vegetables in the spring.

The afternoon session, from 1:30–4:30, covers “Home Composting, Water and Soil Conservation” for a fee of $35. Composting is a way to recycle organic waste from kitchen scraps and return nutrients back to the soil. Topics include: making compost, exploring the soil/food web, basic ingredients and composting techniques, establishing and maintaining a composting system, types of composters and how to build your own, using compost and compost tea in your garden, how to use less water in your garden, building infiltration swales to conserve water & prevent erosion, soil fertility and soil amendments. A demo on how to construct an A -Frame to define contour lines and build compost bins.
