WASHINGTONVILLE- A local Purple Heart recipient has been selected as one of the nation’s 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project honorees. U.S. Army Staff Sgt. George Bates will represent New York during the multi-day tribute honoring America’s combat wounded.
The Patriot Project, run by the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, recognizes recipients for their courage in combat and continued service to their communities.
He served both as an Army Staff Sergeant receiving numerous medals, and as a Washingtonville's Monell Engine Company Past Chief Engineer..

Chosen from hundreds of nominees nationwide, the Honor Flight-style mission will take place April 27–May 1, 2026, and include visits to West Point, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, Washington’s Headquarters, and the 9/11 Memorial.
“George and his fellow honorees represent the very best of America,” said Jeremy McVey, chairman of the National Purple Heart Honor Mission, noting the program’s focus on recognizing veterans—especially those who never received a proper homecoming. Executive Director Col. Russell O. Vernon (Ret.) added that the mission also provides healing and connection among combat-wounded veterans.
Bates entered the Army on Jan. 22, 1968, and served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam’s Iron Triangle. He earned two Purple Hearts in March 1969 after his vehicle came under enemy fire, along with three Bronze Stars, three Army Commendation Medals, and the Combat Infantry Badge, which he considers his most meaningful honor.
Asked what his service meant to him, SSG Bates said, “Even though I was drafted, I felt it was my duty to serve my country. I went in as a boy and came out as a man. I’m proud of my military service.”
Now married for 56 years, Bates is the father of two and worked post-service at AT&T and the Washingtonville School District. He has remained deeply involved in his community, serving for decades with local fire and ambulance organizations and continuing to give back long after his military service ended.
