There is increased use in recent years of the Town's Senior Transportation Program to transport people who no longer drive to complete errands or are signed up for some of the Towns fun group travel events. Stepping out for both medical appointments, grocery shopping and social events is critical both for staying active mentally and physically. The Town of Blooming Grove has several buses for those purposes, but with one that is 2007 and aged out of use they were fortunate to get a bus and CREST Grant from Senator James Skoufis. At the Town's September 16 meeting the Board authorized expenditure for it, not to exceed $129,000. CREST is a Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability and Technology Program, plus receipt of Senior Recreational Activities Funding.
This bus will have 15 seats with plus wheelchair spots. Highway Superintendent Wayne Kirkpatrick gave the stats on the bus, and when someone asked "How much use do they get?", Supervisor Rob Jeroloman said that in addition to plenty of necessary local errands and social visits "There is standing room only when there are trips to places like the Casino".
With programs like this and a new one for county residents called Go Go Grandparent, there is no reason for aging residents to be stuck at home. Blooming Grove also has a very active Senior Center that will be relocating to a fabulous brand new facility at Lasser Park in Spring 2026. It is already in use for some functions, but regular Senior use is required to have a finished kitchen, parts of which have been in a lengthy wait for cooking related equipment.
What a great way all of this activity is for healthy and happy Blooming Grove Seniors, especially the opportunities to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.
If you have senior residents who would like to get out more, check out the Town's Calendar or call the Town at 845-496-4411
