Skoufis Joins Chester TB in Urging Hwy. Supt. to Resign After Shooting Lost Door Dash Delivery Man

Security Cam Footage of Shooting Incident

Indictment of Highway Superintendent John Reilly followed after lawmakers and the public saw video and photos of him firing multiple shots, one of which hit a man in the back on May 2. The man, a worker for Door Dash who was studying English but not yet fluent, had stopped at several houses in the neighborhood when he had trouble with the computer ap he was using to find the house he was trying to deliver the Door Dash delivery to. Reilly's attorney says he plans to claim he shot the man in defense after seeing him enter his neighbor's garage and then approach his house. The man was allegedly trying to drive away when the shot hit his back, causing serious injuries. Latest reports are that the man's condition continues to improve. There were a number of people on social media during the week trying to arrange a GoFundMe to aid in his recovery.

Reilly is a federally licensed Firearms Dealer. The charges in the indictment against him include:

Assault in the First Degree, a Class B Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C Felony and Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E Felony

Officials emphasize Reilly is innocent until proven guilty, and it may be awhile before the case goes to court either at the Chester Town Court or Orange County Court.

Senator James Skoufis posted a Press Release adding to the pressure for Reilly's resignation so that the work of the Town could resume normal operation in a timely manner. He said, “Many in our region, myself included, have been deeply shaken by photo and video evidence published in the media in recent days, depicting Town of Chester Highway Superintendent John Reilly shooting at a DoorDash driver as the individual attempted to leave his property earlier this month. In the interest of ensuring the business of Chester’s residents is done efficiently and effectively, I join the Democrats and Republicans on the Chester Town Board in calling on Mr. Reilly to immediately resign his post.”

As of today, May 16, Reilly is out on bail and has refused to resign. However, Town Supervisor, Brandon Holdridge, says he is working in a remote capacity.
