Washingtonville Police Chief Brian Zaccaro sent a Letter of Recognition this week to 3 Washingtonville police officers, who were contacted to see if they might by any chance be able to track down some lost cash. The department stepped up in an effort to locate $600 which a local resident had lost in the area of Hennessy's Liquors and May's Field earlier in the week. With quick action and the help of video footage in the area the money was quickly recovered. Chief Zaccaro notted "This is the kind of special professionalism that reinforcces trust by the community."

Meanwhile in a sweet example of "karma", this is the week that the Washingtonville Police Department building with its beautiful colonial look was officially designated as a "Historic Building".

Village of Washingtonville Board Meeting - The Washingtonville High School athletic fields have and are continuing to receive major updates this year. Not only has the Wizard football field been redone, there are new fields for soccer, lacrosse and baseball as well as a beautiful new track that the school's track team has just begun to use, and the public is hoping will be open for the local public as well. The two young women pictured below were among the first to test the new running base while a coach stood with about 10 others waiting for a turn.

Lasser Park Meanwhile, at the Town's field athletic activities at Lasser Park are about to ramp up, with Summer Recreation Camp activities winding down and the Town's Highway Department has been working hard for several years developing new adjacent fields. With the adjacent Lasser Homestead historic house and additional property now owned by the Town we can't wait to start hearing about their historical and other programs. So far the Town staff and Town Historian have been hard at work with renovations to the beautiful 1840's home. Meanwhile, Town Historian Johanna Kiernan is developing a a project list amd making plans for displays that will showcase our important local history.

The Dunkin Donuts shop by Sunoco on Route 208 abruptly closed earlier this month. BUT, the gas pumps are running, and the staff inside the Marketplace is ready to help with lots of your daily needs, at good prices and by buying local you will save on gas and contribute to local tax income. Plus, the staff at the Marketplace have been working hard for this community for a long time, so let's stop by and keep them busy!

At the Washingtonville Board Meeting a resident brought up the topic of property (former farmland) that is adjacent to Lasser Park, technically in the Village and which the Town now owns, and suggested that the Village attain an Open Space status for it as it has recently done with other vacant land in the Village. Mayor Tom DeVinko said that since the Town owns the property this will be a topic that he and Supervisor Rob Jeroloman will sit down and discuss and could decide whether it will become in-whole or in-part designated as Open Space or with limited use (as some Open Space acreage is designated). The Town and Village have been seeking a section of vacant land for some years that might be suitable for a Community Garden in the area, and perhaps they will discuss whether, if the acreage is large enough and suitable so a portion of that land might be used for that purpose.

The Town and Village have worked together to arrange for Horse & Carriage Rides to historic sites in our area beginning this September through November. More details to follow on this soon.

Allana Bodman and "Duncan" are already a favorite image in the Village. This was Duncan prancing confidently through the Village during last year's Washingtonville Christmas Parade.

Coming Soon:

WE LOVE A PARADE!!

September will be here before we know it, so several planning sessions have been held both at Town Hall and Village Hall for an exciting event that will happen on September 26. This year our municipality will be the host of the Orange County Volunteer Firemen's Association Parade. It's a big deal, especially since this year's new President of the County Association, Tommy Lynn, is a member of Washingtonville's Monell Fire Department. It is going to be a massive parade, with dozens of fire departments already having signed up to participate, and thousands of the details have already been worked out. The pride and joy of both the Association Members and local Officials was evident throughout the work sessions!

A public Hearing will be held on September 8 to discuss with the public and potentially adopt, the Village's new Safety E-Code of Bike Rules since motorized vehicular devices present special safety challenges.
