Obituary - Esteemed Inorganic Chemistry Professor, Author With Washingtonville Roots Passes in Texas

Gerard Ramsden Dobson (Gerry), Lewisville, Texas, died on September 26th, 2023, at the age of 90. He was born in Lynbrook, New York to Edward Ramsden and Harriet Ethel (Bowman) Dobson, on May 4th, 1933. Gerry graduated from Washingtonville Central High School in New York. After undergraduate education at Cornell University and Florida Southern College, he taught mathematics in the Hatboro-Horsham (PA) public school system while also obtaining a Masters of Education degree from Temple University. During this time, he also worked summers helping to build the St. Lawrence Seaway.

He then enrolled at Florida State University, from which he received a Ph. D. in Inorganic Chemistry in 1963. It was there that he met his wife, the former Kay Ann Tauscher, who preceded him in death in 2021. Gerry was on the Chemistry Faculties at the University of Georgia, the University of South Dakota, and the University of North Texas, retiring from the latter after 30 years of service, as Regents Professor of Chemistry. He was the author of some 150 research publications in the areas of organometallic chemistry, chemical kinetics, and chemical education, and was a member of the editorial advisory board of Inorganic Chemistry, the world's leading journal in that research area.

Gerry was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, professional chemistry fraternity, having served as Grand Master Alchemist (national president), and editor of its magazine, The Hexagon. He also received the Fraternity's highest award, the John R. Kuebler Award, for service to the Fraternity and the chemical profession. He had been a Scoutmaster and Explorer Advisor (Boy Scouts of America), was a member of a number of professional organizations, and of Lewisville Lodge #201, A.F. & A.M. He was also honorably discharged from the US Army, after having served in the reserves for eight years.

He is survived by his three sons, Charles Bowman (Susan), Thomas Kirwan (Roma), and Edward Tauscher (Susan), along with eight grandchildren, Hillary, Hannah, Marydelle, Magdalen, Ruta, Blue, Audra and Alcuin, and three great grandchildren, Emerson, Josephine and Valerie.

Visitation and Masonic Rites will be held at M, ulkey-Mason funeral home in Lewisville, Texas on Monday, October 2nd, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, followed by internment at the Washingtonville cemetery at a later date.
