March 11, 2024 - In Like a Lion!

ejreporter

We have all heard the old adage about March, that it comes "In like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb". Today certainly brought some truth to that, with temperatures hovering between 31 and 44 and a wind HOWLING! Wind records show averages in Orange County of approximately 15mph to 25mph, but with frequent harsh gusts that in places exceeded 40 mph and resulted in downed trees and wires all over the County. Just on the other side of the county line in Poughkeepsie a big slab of facade fell off of the Grand Hotel.

Over the span of about 15 hours there were at least 14 fire calls either in Orange County or mutual aid calls just over the border, including a shocking number of trees and wires down. Several of the trees fell on vehicles including at least one with entrapment. It is a near miracle that as of this hour there were no reported fatalities, at least in the eastern part of Orange County. Several injuries required hospital trips but are deemed to be non life-threatening.

Another adage, at least for some horseback riders, is "Life is just like riding a horse, "Up and Down, Up and Down". And that is certainly is how the temperatures are and will be acting this week So far we had 3 days of frost and ice on any water containers, and temps rising to a high of 44 in late afternoon with the arrival of about 2 hours of off-and-on sun. But as this weather report gets posted, the numbers go up and up, with expected high 50's, some 60's and even approaching a possible 70 degrees.

Since Saturday this was a "Right-On" forecast from weather reports, with DANGEROUS winds predicted about 3 days ahead of their arrival. Those who drove on big tree-lined roads on this March Lion of a day did so at their peril, as follows:

Large tree down on vehicle in Woodbury , Cuddebackville brush fire, Huguenot fire with lines down, Monroe Pine Tree Rd. Tree on wires, Sparrowbush Fire wires down, Circleville Tree on wires, Cronomer Valley Fire Wires down, Otisville Fire with wires down and brush fire, Sparrowbush Utility Pole on fire, Vails Gate Tree and wires down, Fort Montgomery tree on car with entrapment, West Point Fire, Cornwall Tree and wires down, Chester at Camp Monroe tree and wires down.

With winter's dead leaves & all of this newly fallen brush,

PLEASE REMEMBER - THERE IS A BURN BAN.

Will the rest of the week be peaceful weather-wise? Hard to tell if you pay any heed to the 3rd famous March quote, "Beware, the Ides of March are upon us!". (They begin on the 15th). But the birds are singing, the flowers are peeking out, and for now the tune is "Bee happy (sic), It's Springtime".
